study abroad
Many of the services offered by the SMC Library are available to you while you are studying abroad. These are available via the Internet at the SMC Library home page. Be sure to take your SMC Student ID card with you as you will need the barcode number on the back of the card to access many of the services outlined here.
Help: Click on the Ask-Us link on the Library's home page. Students may use the Ask a Librarian service to send an email message to a reference librarian. You can also text message! Be sure to indicate that you are a Study Abroad student. You may also follow the link to the list of subject librarians to find the email for the librarian in your subject area.
Articles and Databases: You may access the databases listed under the List of Databases link or use the tabbed search box on the homepage. Click on the database of your choice. You will be prompted for your last name (lower case) and the 14-digit barcode number on the back of your student ID card. Many of these databases offer full-text articles that can be accessed directly and printed or downloaded. If you do not have your ID card with you and do not know your 14-digit barcode number, contact the library at 925-631-4229 or email us through the Ask A Librarian service
Search By Subject Pages: Choose a subject from the Search by Subject list from the homepage. These pages list databases and Web resources appropriate to particular subjects.
Document Delivery and ILLiad: You may identify articles that are not available full-text. You may still be able to obtain them by using the Library's ILLiad service. Click on the Interlibrary Loan link on the Library's homepage. Click on Request an Item under ILLiad. You will need to register as a first-time user (if you are indeed a first-time user). You may then request an article. In the "Notes" section of the form, please include that you are a Study Abroad Student. Note: In most cases the article will be posted to your ILLiad account in PDF format. The computer you are using will need to have Adobe Acrobat Reader 7.1 or higher in order to view the document. If the article is not available electronically, it will be mailed to you. Please include your Study Abroad address in the "Notes" section of the form.
Sorry, we are not able to send books through the mail to you while you are abroad. However, we may be able to scan a few pages of a book within copyright guidelines.
Bon Voyage!
