What is ILLiad?
ILLiad is Saint Mary's new electronic Interlibrary Borrowing service that allows users to easily request, track, and retrieve materials online.
How is ILLiad better than traditional ILB?
-You enter your personal information once, at the time of your first request.
-You can view the status of all your requests (current as well as completed).
-You can access your articles quickly through Electronic Delivery.
-You can view, edit, and/or cancel recently submitted requests.
Who can use this service?
ILLiad is available to current SMC faculty, students and staff. Users must have an active email account.
How much does it cost?
ILLiad is a free service.
What materials can be requested?
-Articles in journals and databases not available at the SMC Library.
-Books, and occasionally dissertations, not available in the SMC Library or via Link +.
How many requests can I make?
Patrons can have 30 active requests at one time.
What items are usually NOT available?
-Books published during the current year.
-Forthcoming books and periodical articles.
-Entire periodicals (magazines, journals, newspapers, etc.)
-Reference books (manuals, directories, etc.)
-AV materials (videos, CDs, tapes, etc.)
How long does it take to receive items?
-Articles are usually received and posted online within 24-48 hours (not including weekends).
-Books requested through ILLiad are usually received within 3 weeks, but may take longer depending on a variety of factors including difficulty of locating sources and the shipping method of the lender (please try Link + before ILLiad).
How will I be notified?
Standard notification is by email.
What are the pickup and delivery options?
-Articles are posted online where they are available for you to view, print and/or download. They are available for 30 days before they are deleted.
-Books are held at the Circulation Desk for pick-up unless other arrangements have been made, i.e.
-Faculty may designate an authorized person to pick-up books.
-Distance learners and faculty may request Document Delivery.
How long can ILLiad books be kept?
Loan periods for ILLiad books are determined by the libraries that lend them. Most books are loaned for at least 2 weeks, many for 3 to 4 weeks. Due dates are printed on the book straps.
Can ILLiad books be renewed?
ILLiad offers user-initiated renewal requests for an additional two week period. You will be notified if the renewal is denied by the lender. To request renewals, log on to your ILLiad account and click on "checked out items." You will see a link to renew your request at the top of the page. Once you click the link, just wait for an email from the ILL Manager. If you do not see a link to renew, contact the ILL Manager at (925) 631-4840.
What do all the different status messages mean?
ILLiad uses various status messages to track requests and control workflow. Each status listed below may be used to poinpoint the exact location of any given item at any given time. Please note that these reflect the actions of the requesting customer as well as those of the ILB staff. Click here for a list of the status messages and their explanations.
Why was my request cancelled?
Most cancellations occur because the item is available at the SMC Library. Sometimes it is difficult to find materials through Albert, the Library's online catalog. You may find it helpful to consult a reference librarian about an item before requesting it through ILLiad. Click here for a list of cancellation reasons and explanations.
What do I do if I have a problem with one of my electronic articles?
Occasionally our document suppliers send a file with missing pages or pages that are unreadable. Because of the volume of documents we receive here at the SMC Library, we can not review every document, so sometimes we unknowingly deliver these incomplete documents to you. If this happens to you, please contact us by email: ill.stmarys-ca.edu or by phone: (925) 631-4840.
It is not uncommon for scanned documents to have every other page upside down, but these pages can be rotated in Adobe Acrobat Reader. Use the "rotate" tool on the toolbar to change the orientation or "rotate" the document when you view it. Don't forget, you need at least Acrobat 5.x or higher to view your documents. If you do not have a 5.x or higher, please download and install a recent version. Click here to get the latest version of Adobe Acrobat.
