reserves
Material that is required or recommended reading/viewing/listening, or otherwise in high demand, may be placed in the Reserve Collection. The primary function of this service is to enhance student access to the material.
The Library maintains a traditional reserve collection, which is housed behind the Circulation Desk, and an electronic reserve collection, which is available online. Material for both collections can be searched for in Albert, the online catalog. Material from the electronic reserve collection can also be linked to Blackboard. Please see our Reserves Policies and Guidelines, including Copyright Guidelines, in our Reserves Policies.
Traditional Reserves
Material from the traditional reserve collection is available for check-out during all hours the library is open and loan periods range from 2-hours to 1-week (more information). Material in this collection may include:
- Circulating materials owned by Saint Mary’s College Library.
- Personal copies of books, videos, CDs, or other materials not available through the SMC library.
- Photocopies of journal articles, books chapters, test keys, and other items.
Electronic Reserves (ERes)
Material from the electronic reserve collection is available online 24/7 and is password protected (more information). Material in this collection may include:
- Journal articles, book chapters, and test keys.
- Audio tracks.
- Other items that may be scanned for electronic access.
Forms
Two online submission forms and a printable request form are available for placing material on reserve. Instructors must also submit a signed fair-use/copyright form. Reserve requests can also be placed by visiting the Circulation Desk. Please allow 2 business days (Monday – Friday) for processing, possibly longer at the beginning of the term when we are busiest.
Traditional Reserves Request Form
Use this form to request SMC-owned print and media material be placed in the traditional reserve collection. Material will be pulled and processed for you.
Electronic Reserves Request Form

Printable Reserve Request Form
Use this form to submit personal copies of material at the Circulation Desk for use in the traditional and/or electronic reserve collection. Hardcopies of this form are also available at the Circulation Desk.
Printable Fair-Use/Copyright Form and Worksheet
Instructors must sign and submit the fair-use/copyright form at the beginning of the term for each course in which they are placing material on reserve. The Library will allow a one-week grace period for submission of this form. We recommend you complete and retain for your files the worksheet for each item placed on reserve.
