circulation privileges
Your SMC ID is required to checked-out library materials:
Books
The loan period for faculty is one semester for most material. The loan period for staff is 28 days for most material. Reference, periodicals, and special collections cannot be checked-out from the library.
Renew Books
- In person at the Library Circulation desk.
- By calling the Circulation desk at (925) 631-4229.
- Renewing online at My Albert Record/Renew.
Please remember to have your SMC ID on hand for any of these transactions.
Books which have Holds or Recalls placed on them, or books which have a "Lost and Paid" or "Billed" status, may not be renewed.
Recalled Books
Sometimes someone has checked-out the book that you need. Please use Link+ to see if you can request the book from another library. If SMC has the only accessible copy, you can "recall" or request a book that is currently checked-out to someone else, but that person is guaranteed a certain minimum borrowing time before the Library initiates the recall. You'll be notified by e-mail when the book is turned-in, and it will be held for you at the Circulation desk for 10 days.
Overdue Materials
Notification is by e-mail for any overdue or lost materials.
Replacement fees for lost items: $50 plus a non-refundable billing fee. If the material is found and returned within a year, the $50 fee is refunded to your account.
Media
The Library has a variety of movies and documentary films on DVD and VHS, plus audio programs (audio cassettes and CDs).
The Library offers several media carrels on the 2nd floor for listening and viewing media. These include VHS and DVD players, a cassette and CD player, and an LP (phonodiscs) player. Please check-out headphones at the Circulation desk on the 1st floor. Groups of 2-6 may reserve the Byron Bryant Viewing Room, equipped with a 32-inch monitor, DVD and VHS player.
Materials not put on Reserve by instructors for coursework may be checked-out using the following criteria:
- Audio Materials - 7 day loan period
- Video Materials - 7 day loan period
